Choreographer
Suzanne Miller is a company director, choreographer, dancer, costume and set designer and teacher. Since 1985, her multi-ranged dance practice evolves through dialogue with people, place, and history. She derives her work from autobiographical resources using dance as a form of knowledge – memory and making. She innovates movement, explores representation, and celebrates the body. Her current work borrows from language whereby the process of forming letters or characters in space, serve as visible signs of ideas in motion.
“What belongs to us/Ce qui nous appartient” is conceived as a contemporary dance solo that aims to physically translate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) into movement. In the piece, the dancer embodies a unique invented-movement alphabet where each gesture corresponds to a letter from A-Z, such as “A” for clap or “Z” for zig zag- and in this way, physically spells out the rights enshrined in the UDHR.
