Cai never tires of the search for ways to bring emotion to audiences through this art form and to appeal to the varied and countless emotional experiences of human beings. As a deaf artist, hearing differently has become a driving force behind his artistry and originality as a mover, interpreter, and choreographer.
Hearing differently is at the heart of my identity as a dancer, performer, and choreographer. I value the fact that I am both apart from and part of the group, and today I embrace the visibility that comes with being a deaf artist—something I once tried to avoid in order to fit in.
I want to be clear: I did not ‘overcome’ my disability to become a professional dancer. On the contrary, I have integrated it as a unique lens through which to interpret the world, in a form that celebrates multiplicity, nuance, and difference.
