Choreographer
Choreographer and artist Andrea Peña, originally from Bogotá, Colombia, and having developed her practice in the Tiohtiá:ke area of Montreal, has established herself on the international scene with bold creations that offer new forms of storytelling, fusing choreography, design, and constructed spatial installations.
Andrea Peña brings a distinctive blend of experiences to her work, integrating her master’s degree in industrial design into her choreographic practice. She draws on ancestral Colombian memory to construct alternative universes where the body navigates between materiality and transcendence, exploring movement as a force of hybridity, agency, and postcolonial futurity.
She is the founder and director of Andrea Peña & Artists (AP&A), a Montreal-based company founded in 2014. AP&A brings together artists from diverse creative backgrounds to orchestrate large-scale performance ecosystems that blur the lines between dance, architecture, and installation.
Andrea Peña is the recipient of the CHANEL Next Prize (2026), the Ballet BC Choreographer Award (2024), and the Venice Biennale’s New Choreographies Award (2023). Her work has been presented internationally at major institutions in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, contributing to the contemporary discourse surrounding the body as a site of political imagination and radical transformation.
“As a female artist, and therefore in the driver’s seat in this exploration, I chose to take on a supporting role, rather than solely embodying the role of ‘choreographer’. This experience of collectively framing a space for three artists to allow them to expose and confront their own vulnerability was only possible thanks to the incredible trust and availability of François, Jean-Benoît, and Frédérique. Through this work, I am not seeking to provide an answer about vulnerability, but rather to reveal human transparency.”
