Mauvaise Muse was born out of my reflections on how we often put the people we love on a pedestal—or how we sometimes find ourselves on that pedestal. In my creative process, I explored themes related to fantasy, projection, social performance, miscommunication, and the feeling of being misunderstood. We frequently construct idealized versions of the people around us—images that can become limiting or even completely inaccurate. Similarly, we often project a version of ourselves that reflects who we aspire to be rather than who we truly are.
This piece examines the tension between the self and the other—between the person we become when we’re being watched and the person we feel we truly are inside.
