Festival Quartiers Danses invites you to its opening night. Come and discover six never-before-seen excerpts from the shows of our 22nd edition, highlighting the diversity and richness of the festival's performances. Get ready for an evening full of emotions !

Tentacle Tribe I Tangible Shadow of Former Self (7 min)

Originally from Stockholm, Elon Hoglund discovered his passion for dance at the age of seven, mixing breakdance, hip-hop and martial arts into his training. Inspired by various art forms, he created his own approach, fusing street, theatrical and contemporary influences. Since 2001, he has choreographed for a variety of stages, including Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE Show in 2005. The duo presented is inspired by his films Metamorph, Exuviae and Terra, exploring transformation and spiritual growth with filmmakers Stefan Verna and Marites Carino.

Pauline Berndsen Danse - Insectoïdes (7 min)

This duo, led by Pauline Gervais, trained at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, embodies the essence of bodily exploration through unique scenic universes. Founder of Pauline Berndsen Danse in 2018, she has lit up festivals around the world. Focusing on the fascinating world of insects, their creation Insectoïdes explores with grace and agility the diversity and unusual forms of these creatures, highlighting their complexity, duality and mystery. This performance reveals the subtle interactions and relationships inherent in the insect kingdom, celebrating the eternal fascination of this captivating world.

Grands Ballets Canadiens - NEBE (7 min)

Jérémy Galdeano and Vera Kvarcakova, former dance partners at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, have combined their choreographic talents after years of individual collaboration. Their fusion of complementary aesthetics and ideas is evident in their new creation, exploring the duality between earth and heaven. Nebe evokes lightness through fluid dance, sublimated by ethereal costumes and accompanied by delicate music, including the famous Pas de deux from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Grands Ballets Canadiens - Podium (7 min)

During his training at ESBQ, Etienne danced with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and worked with renowned choreographers such as John Alleyne and Andrew Skeels. After joining Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in 2019, he will present his first creation, Complet Brouillé, in 2020. His new piece, Podium, explores frenzy and exhaustion through contemporary ballet on pointe, accompanied by an experimental soundtrack.

Jane Mappin - Fleeting moments: studies in being human (7 min)

The piece presented is part of Jane Mappin’s artistic process. She has forty-five years’ experience as a performer, choreographer and teacher of contemporary dance. Her creations explore the links between art, social diversity and fundamental rights, including mental health, and are performed across Canada and internationally. Her work Fleeting Moments : Studies in being Human, in collaboration with composer and cellist Erich Kory and performer Rosalie Paquette, explores the shifting landscape of memory and individual narratives that reflect the very essence of humanity.

Margie Gillis - Everything that Blooms (7 min)

The piece presented is part of the career of Margie Gillis, an eminent figure in Canadian dance, who marked the 20th and 21st centuries with her creativity and commitment. Founder of the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation in 1981, she created over 150 works, exploring experimentation and innovation. Celebrating her 50th anniversary in 2023, she continues to pass on her love of dance. Her work, in collaboration with the Legacy Project, explores themes of human nature, social relationships and self-assertion through vibrant, captivating choreography, offering an introspective look at the human condition and the future of dance.
