Jessica Joy Muszynski is a Filipino-Polish-Canadian dancer and choreographer. In May 2019 she graduated in the inaugural class of USC Kaufman with a BFA in Dance. Discovering her passion for choreography during her time in University, her senior thesis culminated in a thirty-minute length work. Following graduation, Jessica danced with Aszure Barton & Artists in a two-month creation project, and is now based in Montréal dancing with RUBBERBANDance. The Festival Quartiers Danses will be Jessica’s professional debut as a choreographer.
Jessica will work this year with filmmaker Marites Carino for the co-creation of their short dance film.
Unlike my previous creations, the process for Fam ly has been much more methodical. I asked myself how I might take literary devices such as metaphors, juxtaposition, alliteration etc., and transfer them from the art of writing to choreography; Starting with a lexicon of movement I have kept in my back-pocket for over a year, I began to build the piece with a clear intention – weaving, best I could, the nuanced emotion I hope to get across.
