James Viveiros

Biography

James is a graduate of both the Grant MacEwan College Music Theatre and Dance Programs where he received the Evelyn Davis scholarship. He was a former company member of COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD (CMC). For the past sixteen years, he has performed in contemporary dance festivals around the world. He has also collaborated with several Canadian companies and choreographers as an interpreter and creator. In 2009 James was a recipient of a Gemini award (film and television) alongside the other company members of CMC, for best performance in a Performing Arts Program or series for bODY_rEMIX/les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG, by CMC. James was awarded funding on two occasions from CALQ to become a certified Gaga teacher and studied with Batsheva under the direction of Ohad Naharin in Tel Aviv, Israel. James also works as a rehearsal director and choreographic assistant to Collective La Tresse.

Artistic Vision

My dance practice is essential to my self-expression and is a vital way for me to better understand my past and my present, and to direct me in my future. I turn to dance to exercise my freedom to communicate and to renew myself through a physical release.
